Effective seismic restraint in hospitals is essential for protecting both lives and life-saving equipment in the event of seismic activity. Studies show that in past seismic events, MEP system failures (piping, ductwork, cable trays, etc.) often caused more disruption than structural damage. As with any healthcare facility, uninterrupted operation and system resilience were paramount.

In 2015, Acrefine was selected as the seismic engineering partner for the Kaiser Permanente South Baltimore Medical Center – a critical healthcare infrastructure project in Maryland, USA. Our involvement focused on ensuring the structural and operational integrity of key MEP and HVAC systems under seismic stress.

Engineering Scope & Solutions Provided

Acrefine delivered a complete seismic restraint and vibration isolation package tailored for medical-grade reliability and code compliance. Our engineering team analyzed system loads, mounting dynamics, and vibration behavior across several mechanical units. Based on this analysis, we supplied:
ASI-T1 and ASI-T2 seismic spring isolators with 2” deflection, engineered for large-capacity air-cooled VSD screw-type chillers.
ASI-R series rubber isolators, ideal for split-system condensing units and steam humidifiers, delivering both stability and acoustic comfort.
ASI-S spring isolators with inertia bases to support critical pump assemblies while controlling dynamic movement.
AH-R type vibration isolation hangers, combined with steel wire rope bracing, to suspend fan coil units securely under seismic conditions.

These systems not only complied with IBC and ASHRAE guidelines but also aligned with Kaiser Permanente’s internal mechanical reliability standards.

Why Seismic Restraint in Hospitals Matter

Hospitals require uninterrupted climate control, sterilization, and air handling systems. Acrefine’s engineered solutions provided the necessary shock resistance, acoustic comfort, and long-term durability that this medical center needed.

In critical care environments, even minor system disruptions can compromise patient safety, delay emergency procedures, or affect the performance of life-sustaining equipment. By proactively engineering for seismic conditions, healthcare facilities not only preserve their operational continuity but also demonstrate a robust commitment to patient care, staff safety, and regulatory compliance during natural disasters.
